TOP 3 TIPS ON HOW TO PRACTICE DRAWING

Too busy to draw and decided to give up? Hold on! Don’t give up just yet. In this post, I’ll give you my Top 3 Tips on how to practice drawing.

TIP 1: Avoid Perfection

Striving for perfection is not a bad thing but expecting perfection at the beginning is demoralizing.   Seriously, I can’t tell you how awful it feels to compare yourself to a better artist.  This really got me thinking. I found that many people, including myself, avoid drawing at times due to fear.  We are afraid to have people comment on a bad drawing especially if you keep a sketchbook. If you have a sketchbook, then the tendency is to want perfect looking sketches at all times in the event that someone decides to look at it.

If you treat the sketchbook like a personal “journal” which is more a less a journey to improving your creative abilities, then it takes on a whole new meaning. It becomes more personal to you then as a coffee book for other people to see.  Plus…even if you think your sketches are awful, chances are most people would be happy to even look at your stick figures(or lie about it).

TIP 2: Start Slow and Spend only 15-30 min a day

Think of sketching as a mental exercise.  Some get caught up in thinking they have to sketch for hours every day. Most busy professionals looking for a creative outlet, avoid sketching because they think it takes too much time.   We forget we have more time than we think. Count up the hours you spend doing the following:

  1. Watching TV/Netflix
  2. Browsing the Internet
  3. Playing Video Games
  4. Socializing with Friends

I don’t know about you but I used to spend HOURS doing everything I listed above. Then I decided to get rid of cable(but binge watched Netflix).  So all you need to do is reduce the time you spend on the items above by 30 minutes and Whola! You can form a habit of drawing everyday for 30 min.

Other time hacks to help you find time to draw:

  1. Draw during your lunch break at work
  2.  Sketch at night before you go to bed.
  3.  If you take your kids to classes in the evening, spend half the tie watching your kids and spend 15 min sketching people around you.

TIP 3: Draw from Reference

Sometimes we decide not to draw at all because we have no ideas. We can’t think of anything to draw when looking at that blank sheet of paper. I can’t believe the amount of pressure I feel when I look at a blank sheet of paper.

So the remedy for this is to draw still life or just take a photograph and try to replicate the photo.

Here are some ideas to consider when starting to draw:

  1. Insects
  2. Fruits
  3. People
  4. Bowls
  5. Birds
  6. Automobiles

Have an awesome day.
