This video demo will cover the basics on how to render a Dinosaur with markers and some water color paints.  You’ll learn a step by step approach with easy to understand principles in rendering.  It’s a perfect activity to engage with your kids and have fun with them through this process of creation!  Along the way, your kids will learn some tidbits about Raptors from my 9 year old son, Neal.

Tools needed for the course:

  1. Paper – You can use regular copy paper but I recommend either marker paper from Canson or Hammermill Laser Paper. If using copy paper, just place an extra sheet below your drawing so the marker does not bleed through to the drawing surface
  2. 2-3 Grey markers – Light grey, medium gray, and dark grey. Alcohol based markers are preferred but if you only have crayola markers, you can use those.
  3. 2 Green markers – Light Yellow Green and Grass green to color the body
  4. 1 – Pinkish Red marker for the tongue
  5. 1- Orange yellow marker for the eyes
  6. Water color paints and Old tooth brush
  7. HB or 2B Pencil

RENDERING DEMO CONTENTS:

DURATION: 30 min

STEP 1 – BASE COLOR – First step is to choose a base color for the color of your dinosaur.  For our Raptor, we decided to go with a light greenish yellow color. You don’t have to get the exact color, but something close to it.

If you want to use your own drawing, no problem. Just be sure to make a copy of it and use the copy for this exercise.

STEP 2 – DINOSAUR BODY SHADING – Once the base color is complete, we will cover techniques to add more grayish tones to the body of the dinosaur. When you look at animals, they are not just one color, but many colors. When we add more colors, it makes them more realistic.

STEP 3 – CREATING DINO SCALES – As a reptile, similar to to alligators, dinosaurs have the same type of skin. I’ll show you short cut in creating these “scales” for the skin of the dinosaur by using the darker grey marker.

STEP 4 – CREATING DETAILS – Now that we have the first layers of colors, we can start to add some more details and colors with more greens.  This will really help pop the image out of the page!

STEP 5  – PENCIL DETAILING – Adding and refining details with pencil. This includes defining the scales on the skin more. We will work on the scales throughout the body of the raptor.

STEP 6  – COOL ORANGE EYES – In this brief video, we will color the eyes by adding a little bit of orange to the outer edges of the eye. This will help increase the intensity of the eye color and make it more realistic. This could be your last stage of the drawing but if you want to make your drawing a little more special, you can add the paint splats in the next section.

STEP 7  – WATER COLOR SPLATS – Welcome to the bonus section of the course where we will use water colors to create a super cool affect by splattering paint with a tooth brush. It’s a technique that is commonly used when creating “stars” for a galaxy by we are going to use this technique to add more texture to the drawing. This will be the final step for you to complete the course.

TARGET AUDIENCE :

Kids of all ages. Ideal for kids from ages 6-12.
